Are Yipiyap’s gap-year tutors still working in-schools?
Where are Yipiyap’s in-school tutors?
Yipiyap are the UK’s peer learning pioneers. Since 2012, we’ve been championing the power of the peer voices in schools and colleges across the UK.
For 13 years, we trained high-achieving gap year students to return to school as academic peer tutors, primarily in maths and English. That decade of life-changing work proved one thing beyond a shadow of a doubt: when learners are supported by a relatable peer who can speak their language, their academics come on leaps and bounds.
But beyond academic progress and grade improvements, we’ve seen how else peer tutoring can change young people’s lives, inspiring confidence, autonomy, and a love of learning.
This work was transformative, for learners and our gap-year tutors alike, but in September 2025, we hung up our tutoring hats for good.
In part, the funding situation in the education sector meant that we had to shift our focus to services we can deliver at a more accessible price point – like our digital tutoring course, Yipiyap Aspire.
But post-pandemic, we heard again and again from schools that what they needed from their peer mentors was the pastoral support they offered. That’s why September 2024 saw the launch of Peerscroller, a digital platform using the power of the peer voice to deliver personal development, life skills, and socio-emotional education.
We continue to work with inspirational young role models through Peerscroller, and while we are no longer delivering in-school academic support, our belief in the power of the peer voice hasn’t changed one bit.
Can Yipiyap still support with academics?
Although we’re no longer delivering in-school tuition, we can still support with learners’ academic progress.
For direct academic support, consider our Yipiyap Aspire: Train to Tutor course. We distilled over a decade of experience training ambitious young people to tutor into a short, digital course. Train to Tutor equips sixth form and college students with the skills and knowledge they need to tutor their peers, giving your school a homegrown squad of inspiring young peer tutors. Five modules of videos and activities promote discussion, peer learning, and self-reflections, while learners gain key transferable skills that will dazzle jobs and universities
Besides direct academic support, our life skills and personal development platform Peerscroller can support your learners holistically. Engaging content from relatable peers addresses academics directly, by supporting the skills needed for learning, revision techniques, and support with wellbeing and strategy around exams. Meanwhile, a whole host of other topics remove external barriers to learning, from mental and physical wellbeing to healthy relationships, digital safety, and financial literacy.
Can Yipiyap still support with our careers programme?
Yes - although we’re no longer recruiting gap-year tutors, our other services can support learners and fulfil the Gatsby Benchmarks.
Again and again, former Yipiyap tutors told us how their gap year tutoring with Yipiyap had been a crash course in the professional skills they still use in their careers. Yipiyap Aspire: Train to Tutor is our way of sharing that with everyone, providing school and college learners with employability skills and an encounter with a real employer.
We distilled our tutor training (plus some new material) into a digital course for sixth-form and college students - giving participants serious transferable skills, a dazzling CV, and a potential source of income after-school, at uni, or on their gap year.
For broader career support, consider Peerscroller. We designed Peerscroller address the whole of the PSHE curriculum, through a uniquely-engaging, peer-led format. Alongside support with a whole range of real-life issues, leaners will find prompts and guidance on choices and pathways, work and career, employment rights and responsibilities, and financial choices.
Can our Key Stage 5 leavers still work with Yipiyap?
We’re no longer recruiting gap-year students to tutor with Yipiyap, but the power of the peer voice is still key to everything we do.
As such, we still need inspiring young role models on the Peerscroller team, to help create and deliver content as writers, presenters, editors, and school/college support staff.
If your leavers are planning for a career in creative industries, communications, or education, we’d welcome their application. Check out peerscroller.com to see what roles are currently available.
