The Story of Yipiyap

2012:
Anne founds Yipiyap
In 2012, former maths teacher Anne Morris was inspired by a report on poor numeracy levels in the UK to find a solution. The answer came in the form of an under-appreciated pool of talent: enthusiastic, high-achieving gap-year students, with a passion for their subject and time on their hands.
At that time, peer learning was still pretty well unheard of - but it proved a success, and Yipiyap's tutors soon branched out into English, science, and a whole range of other subjects.
2012-2025:
The Win-Win-Win
Over the years, hundreds of bright young people have kick-started their career as Yipiyap tutors. (And half our team's made up of former-tutors to this day!)
But alongside that, hundreds of schools and colleges have benefitted from super-engaging and accessibly-priced peer support - and tens of thousands of learners have had their lives changed for the better by an inspiring role model.
That's the "win-win-win" that has always defined Yipiyap.
2020:
Yipiyap goes digital
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Yipiyap began exploring new ways to deliver support to learners and we branched out into the digital world (where we remain today!)
As National Tutoring Programme approved partners, our live and pre-recorded online academic intervention made sure learners didn't fall through the cracks of lockdown - and laid the foundations for the digital peer learning we still deliver today, through Peerscroller and Yipiyap Aspire.
2023:
Yipiyap Aspire launches
Again and again, former Yipiyap tutors told us how their gap year tutoring with Yipiyap had been a crash course in the professional skills they still use in their careers.
Yipiyap AspireL Train to Tutor is our way of sharing that with everyone. We distilled our tutor training (plus some new material) into a digital course for sixth-form and college students.
Participants develop serious skills, a dazzling CV, and a potential source of income, while their while their school or college enhances their careers offer and gains a crack squad of inspiring young peer tutors to support others.
2024:
Peerscroller launches
While Yipiyap's in-school tutoring focused on academics, we saw the difference a relatable role model made to learners' wellbeing - and so did schools.
In the aftermath of the pandemic, the need for targeted pastoral support grew - and more and more, that's what schools and colleges were asking for.
We set about developing a way to distill that peer mentoring magic into an accessible format. The result was Peerscroller, our e-learning platform, delivering bite-sized and engaging videos on PSHE and personal development topics, all delivered by relatable role models.
2025:
In-school tutors hang up their ties
Yipiyap's in-school tutoring was transformative, for learners and our gap-year tutors alike - but in September 2025, we hung up our in-school tutor ties.
In part, the funding situation in the education sector meant that we had to shift focus towards services we could deliver at a more accessible price point. But post-pandemic, we also heard again and again from schools that what they needed from their peer mentors was pastoral support.
Yipiyap Aspire: Train to Tutor and Peerscroller allow us to deliver that life-changing peer support with careers and life skills - and while we are no longer delivering in-school academic support, our belief in the power of the peer voice hasn’t changed one bit.
