I hope you have all had a great week! What a wonderful sunny week we’ve had and only one week to go before half term so fingers crossed the good weather continues! It is definitely the best part of the school year and so I really hope you are enjoying these last few weeks with Yipiyap, your schools and your students. For those of you who have an exam-free summer, make the most of it and and for those who do have some to take, we are all rooting for you and you will soon be revision and care free!
So, what’s been going on this week?
Your RDs will have been in touch about our Fit For Future event on Saturday 15th June. I know I have been going on about this for ages but to me it just represents a brilliant day of workshops and presentations to give you lots of skills to go forward with into your lives beyond Yipiyap. Workshops on happiness, sign language, self defence and first aid along with our end of the year presentations. We also have an additional meditation workshop which is a new and exciting one and should get us all centred!! Whilst this is not a mandatory event, we really encourage you all to come as these events are our way of investing in your futures and acknowledging all of your hard work over the year with us. It’s also our chance to say a big ‘thank you’ ! I know your RDs are in touch with you all about this as they to want to see you there to say a last goodbye in person before you go to pastures new! We really hope you can make it!
We have a very exciting development at Yipiyap HQ next week – a new member of the team, Hannah, is joining us as Head of Colleague Support. Now admittedly it is a little late in the day for all our current cohort to really get to know Hannah over the next 7 weeks but from the point of view of helping to support 100 tutors in September with all their settling in questions and needs, Hannah will be an amazing support to all of us.
The great thing about Hannah joining at this stage is that, in order to really understand the tutor role, she can learn so much from you as you are all now experts! As part of her induction, we’d love Hannah to speak to as many of you as possible so if you are asked to arrange a time for this, it would be great if you could come back as soon as possible to set it up. Thanks everyone in advance!!
Norwich, Peterborough and Derby
A steady week in NPD as GCSEs really get going and what has been wonderful to see has been the investment that my team have had in their students as they walk through those doors into the exam hall and they can do no more to help them. One comment from Niamh particularly made me laugh: “Feeback from the invigilators is that no-one has had their heads on the desks so far. Always a good sign!”
I’m not sure if my face is red from sunburn or from the manic week I’ve had! Lots of positive meetings about support next year, including a new school in Stockport that could see lots of different ways to implement support. I also had confirmation of support from Royton and Crompton, a new school in Oldham! Don’t forget, if you recommend a friend that works successfully with us you receive a £50 finders fee and I’ll need lots of excellent tutors to follow in your footsteps. I know a few of you have mentioned that you’ll be entering the Pedagogy Corner competition so make sure you don’t miss the deadline folks!
Denbighshire and Cheshire
We've had some small victories this week with both new tutors coming on board, as well as some great news from Prestatyn High School who will be joining us again next year. I've been busy this week getting things ready to welcome our newest member to the office. Hannah will be a great asset to both the tutors and office staff so it'll be a fun process of getting her involved in the day-to-day tasks. I've also had another visit to Priestley College this week, catching students between lessons to talk about Yipiyap and their plans for next year. Fingers crossed for some more applicants from there! Finally, it's been a big relief to have our new induction process hit a new milestone this week. Can't wait for the next wave of tutors to test this out!
Flintshire and Wrexham
A really positive week in Wrexham and Flintshire. I’ve been out and about across the region where I met two really good prospective tutors at Deeside college. I’ve also had some really productive meetings – one with a Wrexham school who were interested in Yipiyap last year but didn’t quite get to the point of coming on board but are much more optimistic this year. The second meeting was a bit left-field and looking to see if there are ways of Yipiyap being able to support young adults who are trying to get into the work place on apprenticeships. It would be a slight evolution of what we currently do but I think Yipiyap tutors would be fantastic at this – watch this space!
London, Yorkshire and The Humber
Fantastic week! Over the worst of my cold and enjoying the return of the sunshine to my life! Thanks everyone who’s responded so far for Fit For Future day - look forward to seeing you all soon! Thanks also to everyone for managing so well this week with so few absences despite it being flu season again apparently! Great work from all. I’ve been interviewing all over again and generally trying to get things sorted for next week. Delighted also to meet a new addition to the team, Hannah, who I’m looking forward to getting to know in the next few weeks!
Wall of Happy
This week Joss starts us off with his special mentions
Shout out to Krish this week for stepping up to do two extra days at ATS to support the A-Level students he’s been working with all year. If he wasn’t there they’d have had NOBODY helping them with their Mechanics so he’s had an immeasurable impact for them. Well done for your great attitude to the very last, Krish.
Next to Alan
This week goes to Emma for some really creative work in her schools - it's always nice to see tutors getting involved in other parts of their schools. I'll let the photographs speak for themselves, but clearly you've put a lot of work into these displays and posters! Keep it up!
Now over to Richard
My wall of happy shout out this week goes to Harry and the impact he is having at both Ysgol Bryn Alyn and Hawarden High School. It’s not easy to join any organisation mid-year and schools are large daunting places to join for anybody (including teachers and senior leaders). However I’m really pleased to see the evidence of progress of a number of his students from some of his impact forms – in particular the impact he has had on engaging young people with their work and encouraging them to do much more than they had been ordinarily doing in class. You’re doing a great job Harry – keep it up!
Now to Jess
Lots of birthdays this week so I’m glad you all got a chance to enjoy some nice weather! Happy Birthday to Amir, Charlotte and Elena. Hope you had a lovely day!
Two of our tutors received some lovely feedback from a parent this week that I wanted to share with you all:
J had a very productive Chemistry lesson with Ruwaydah this morning which was held held remotely by video call. A new but, successful method of tuition delivery. J felt it went very well and it helped fill his knowledge gaps as preparation for tomorrow's Chemistry paper as well as having the opportunity to revise in talking over how to approach his exam.
J met with Elle to prepare for English Lit this afternoon. J fed back to me that he feels that Elle has really turned around his ability to tackle his English exams in terms of confidence.J is not worried about his exam today
And, finally to Anne
My wall of happy goes to Mo this week – I think I’ve mentioned before that Mo rates his day every single day on the App but what has really become apparent is the enthusasim he has for his work in the comments he puts. Every one is really positive and ends with how much he’s looking forward to being back in school next time he’s there - it struck a chord with everyone in the office how wonderful it is that you walk out of work just looking forward to getting back in the next day! I’m like that too, Mo!
Pedagogy Corner Competition - Deadline extended until the end of term
We have extended the deadline for the Pedagogy corner competition to FRIDAY 24th MAY so that everyone has chance to get their answers in. Just a reminder, first prize will be £25 Amazon vouchers.
Katie and Rebecca’s Top 20 Tunes
A big thanks to Rebecca and Katie for their top 20 playlist this week. A superb collection of British, Irish and US indie bands, some laid-back R&B, haunting vocalists and a couple of classics thrown in for good measure. A fantastic eclectic mix to head into the last week of this half term.
Here’s the link, enjoy!
As always, thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
