Saying “yes” to Yipiyap was the first step I ever took outside of my comfort zone. I’d spent years coasting through school and doing quite a spectacular job of avoiding the opportunities that had been made available to me. On the last day of my A-Level exams, a small piece of paper with a Yipiyap job description was placed in my hand and some combination of fear and intrigue made walk up and ask for more information. The rest is history!

Working with Yipiyap not only taught me a great deal, but also revealed a number of my strengths that I had been previously unaware of. I saw for the first time that my confidence was a valuable asset and that I could use it to win others round. I saw the usefulness of a sense of humour and learned the importance of a smile and a laugh to control the atmosphere of a room. Through the trials and tribulations of a year working with young people, I developed a new set of personal standards that had been absent during my school years. I learned to be diligent; to ‘muck in’; to always be honest and punctual. I carried these standards and good habits on to university - comfortably holding down various jobs without compromising my studying. I have no doubt that I would have had far less success at university without having had such a challenging and stimulating gap year.

Saying “yes” to Yipiyap was the first step I ever took outside of my comfort zone and to this day remains one of the most valuable decisions I have ever made.
